Nov 16 Almoner Blog

Nov 16

A renowned former politician once famously replied when asked what his priorities were for government(,) “Education, Education, Education." I’m pleased to say that for our PGM Bro. Jim Ellis and I the priority is Communication, Communication Communication."

We often take communication for granted but it's part of every day life and as freemasons it plays a large part in what we do when you consider visiting, proposing and replying to toasts and enjoying social interaction. So when it comes to communication what do you want from me and the Almoners of the province and how often ? Only from listening to your feedback can we get the level and content of our communication correct.

I’d encourage you to speak to your lodge Almoner or alternatively if you see me around the province, do what I enjoy - pull me aside and let's talk.

Almoners’ Concert

As you know the Almoners’ concert was held within the premises of Lodge Polkemment, No.927, on Wednesday, 19th October. What a fantastic evening was had by all who attended and more particularly our special guest for the evening, the residents from Sir James McKay House. Special mention should be given to local entertainer Stevie Cowan who has royally entertained us, not only this year, but over the last few years.

Almoners’ Children's Halloween Party

Again, as you know, the Almoners’ Children's Halloween party was held within the premises of Lodge Lord Bruce, No.1601, on Saturday, 29th October.

What a wonderful day, brethren, and it's great credit to the parents and grandparents for some wonderful costumes on the day. Highlight of the day for me was seeing our PGM, Bro. Jim Ellis and DPGM, Bro. Ronnie Gemmill, dookin for apples. What great sports these two brethren are and more importantly what great memories to give our youngsters.

The Almoners Never Stop

Just when you think the Almoners might take breath and put their feet up there’s the Almoners' Race Night on Saturday, 12thNovember, in Lodge St John, Midcalder, No.272, and in the build up to Christmas they will distribute their hampers to those less fortunate than ourselves.

Final Thought

As the Installation season is now upon us and with the festive season fast approaching let's take time to remember two things. First, remember that moment when you stood poor and penniless in the North East Corner and respond generously to the Grand Almoner's appeal. Lastly, the festive season is a time for celebration and family but, and it is a BIG but, the festive season can be a particularly raw time for those who have suffered bereavement, lonely brethren who no longer attend their lodge and, of course, those who are at home or alternatively in hospital due to illness.

I ask you to spare a kind thought for these brethren.
